Magnus Karlsson has joined No 4 Hamilton Place as Head Chef. With a B.Sc. in Food and Nutrition Sciences from Gothenburg University, Sweden, he will brings a fresh approach to the food he and his team produce for event guests and conference delegates at the Park Lane venue.

Magnus outlines his approach:-

With its seven event rooms for up to 300 guests, a 250 seat lecture theatre and a superb terrace overlooking Hyde Park, No 4 Hamilton Place hosts a remarkable range of different events. The spectrum of catering that they demand is a very wide one, but whether the event involved is a relaxing reception or a mentally demanding training event, I am applying the same principles.

My style of cooking is to keep things simple and flavoursome; making sure the food has no additives and as close to wholefood as I can get. My typically Scandinavian approach delivers great food that is highly nutritional. In support of that approach, I am sourcing fresh, seasonal produce as locally as possible. All the most popular ingredients have something to commend them in terms of nutrition and I’d like to describe what they achieve.

Fish, especially fatty fish like salmon, herring or mackerel, contain polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are called essential fats because they need to be provided by the food. They may protect against cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart attack.
Fatty fish also contain vitamin D. The number one provider of vitamin D is the sun, but during the winter months the main source is food. Vitamin D helps the body with absorption of calcium.

Vegetables are a good source of vitamin C. Broccoli, peppers and cabbage in particular contain a high dose of the vitamin especially when raw. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and promotes the uptake of iron. As a calcium source cheese is perfect. If you are lactose intolerant, try a hard, aged cheese. During the aging process most of the lactose is used as energy. We need calcium for formation of bone and for cell functioning.

Nuts are great in that they lower cholesterol levels as well as blood pressure.

Meat is a great source of protein which contains all of the amino acids that we need. Protein builds and repairs muscles and is a part of the immune system. Meat also contains iron that is a part of haemoglobin which transports oxygen in the blood.

Potatoes contain carbohydrates which are the number one source of energy for the body. They are best for us when steamed, boiled or roasted. Potatoes are low in calories and at the same time filling, which means you consume less calories.
Root vegetables are a good source of dietary fibre, which can help decrease blood cholesterol levels.

As well as being packed with vitamin C, berries contain flavonoids which are believed to enhance memory and learning.
A nice cup of coffee is a good source of antioxidants. They fight off free radicals that are harmful to us. Free radicals are formed from pollutants, tobacco smoke and alcohol.

Bread, especially whole wheat bread, contains Thiamin that plays a part in the metabolism. It is necessary for the utilisation of carbohydrates.

I provide services to No 4 Hamilton Place through Dish, the award-winning independent caterer.

“Food, that is at the same time delicious and truly nutritious is my passion”

As well as our stunning Mayfair venue, we enjoyed scrumptious bowl food by Dish and an awe inspiring speaker Brian Milton. Brian entertained us with the story of his adventures as the first person to fly a micro light around the world, and how he overcame the challenges of ditching into the Arabian Gulf in the middle of the Iran/Iraq conflict – a fitting story at the home of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

1… 2… 3… Sleep! We also experienced a truly captivating performance from HypnoTWIST. HypnoTWIST, from the creators of The Three Waiters, cleverly fuses popular elements of live entertainment, Hypnotism with Surprise Entertainment! We’ll be post a video of the evenings performance here soon, in the meantime here’s HypnoTWIST’s official video.

The speaker for the evening is Brian Milton, a born adventurer. His first major expedition was in 1968 when he drove a battered Austin 7 Ruby across the Sahara Desert to meet his fiancée! Since then he has combined a career as a TV presenter and financial journalist with a series of incredible airborne adventures around the world. In 1998 he became the first person to fly a microlight around the world, a feat that earned him the Britannia Trophy, one of the world’s greatest aviation awards. He will share his experiences and survival tactics with us.

'Reasonable hospitality' or 'bribery'? What does this mean for you when entertaining VIPs? Ken Clarke from the Ministry of Justice provides some general guidance and clarity to the laws.

Have you wondered how the forthcoming Bribery Act might affect using No.4 Hamilton Place as a hospitality venue?

The following message from Ken Clarke and general guidance, on line, from the Ministry of Justice provide some clarity – especially the reference to reasonable hospitality. Of course demonstrating that you have ‘adequate procedures’ in place to avoid implication of bribery is yet another red tape burden on the shoulders of business. No.4 Hamilton Place is grateful that the HBAA, of which 4HP is a member, engaged with the MOJ and sought the following guidance.

Today I have announced that the Bribery Act will enter into force on July 1st, replacing and bringing together the current bribery laws which date back to 1889. I am also publishing guidance to businesses about how they can reduce their exposure to bribery and understand the Act. This guidance is available on the Ministry of Justice’s website here:
http://www.justice.gov.uk/guidance/bribery.htm

The Act creates new offences of offering or receiving a bribe, bribery of foreign public officials and of a failure to prevent a bribe being paid on an organisation’s behalf. It also provides a defence to the last of these where an organisation can show that it has ‘adequate procedures’ in place. These are quite tough rules. But what the guidance I am also publishing today underlines – after helpful consultation with businesses, and NGOs – is that combating bribery is about common sense, not bureaucracy.

Bribery is one of those things we know when we see – it is a cynical attempt to manipulate someone’s judgement by financial or similar means. The guidance makes clear that no one is going to try to stop businesses getting to know their clients by taking them to events like Wimbledon, Twickenham or the Grand Prix. Reasonable hospitality to meet, network and improve relationships with customers is a normal part of business.

The guidance also explains that the procedures that need to be put in place to rely on the statutory defence only have to be proportionate to the size and nature of the business. Modest risks require modest procedures to mitigate them. Small companies ought not fear that they will suddenly need an army of lawyers in order to manage bribery risks. They can rely heavily on simply telling staff, verbally.

The guidance clarifies too that an ‘associated’ person will only engage criminal liability for a company where they actually represent the organisation, and any bribery they commit is intended to benefit it.

It will be up to the court to decide whether or not any individual organisation can be said to be ‘carrying on a business’ in the UK. They obviously take a range of factors into account – mere listing on the London Stock Exchange or just the fact of having a UK incorporated subsidiary would not necessarily mean the Act applies. To be clear: this is not a ‘carve-out. Under the terms of the Act, it has always been a decision for the courts.

A very important issue is the question of prosecutions. Cases will be brought where they are in the public interest, which will require the personal agreement of the Director of Public Prosecutions or the Director of the Serious Fraud Office. I do not expect a large number of prosecutions and certainly not for trivial cases.

The guidance does not and cannot change the substance of the Act. But by improving clarity about its intentions, it should arm organisations of all sizes against the fears that millions of pounds must be spent on procedures, that in my opinion, no honest business will require. This is particularly important for small businesses, which is why, alongside the main guidance, I am publishing ‘quickstart’ advice tailored to their needs. If you are a small business owner, I strongly recommend you download a copy at the address above.

The ultimate aim of this legislation is to make life difficult for the minority of organisations responsible for corruption, not to burden the vast majority of decent and law-abiding businesses. We are not going it alone in pursuing this objective but working in tandem with our partners in the OECD, Europe and the United States.

I believe the Act will create greater clarity and establish a level playing field, helping to align trading nations around decent standards. It offers a strong hand to any worker or manager from whom illegal payments are solicited – giving them the power to say no. And it protects the reputation of British firms – particularly among institutional investors.

Kenneth Clarke
Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice
